Consistency and achieving goals – given the time spent achieving them – and maintaining good performance is not an easy task. Some psychologists dedicate their work to several years of trying to improve people’s performance. Studies have been conducted with athletes, students, air traffic controllers and other professionals.

One way to achieve improvement in performance is through motivation, organizing information, and visualizing tasks. This can be applied to most tasks. From these many ways to improve performance,  we have selected three simple ideas for this article. The good thing is that these can be applied yourself and have no unwanted side effects.

Managing time and setting priorities clearly

Good order is essential for us to achieve maximum performance in any project, job or task. Good organization is the basis for stable priorities. This is an effective way to organize these priorities depending on the circumstances.

We can use this method to put pending tasks on a calendar to improve performance. This allows us to reach our deadlines. It also helps us know when it’s the right time to delegate our work or when to remove it from our “pending tasks” list.

Be realistic in planning and organizing

One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to improve their performance is the  inability to calibrate how long it takes them to achieve their goals or complete a task. This causes great frustration. They always feel like things aren’t going well. In addition, the lack of productivity they perceive makes them more likely to give up or be harassed. This ends up creating a spiral that will eventually destroy their self-esteem.

How can we avoid falling into this trap? The best thing we can do while planning a complex task is to break it down into smaller, simpler parts. By doing so, the time we estimate to complete the task will be more realistic. If we have no idea about this at all, this fragmentation will also help us remember the tools we need to do the job.

The next good idea to achieve a more realistic idea is to  divide the day into two parts: morning and afternoon. It is also important to include breaks and small rewards. Moments of focus are just as important as free time if we really want to do well and maintain our motivation.

Efforts to improve performance, stay motivated, and be consistent without an understanding of why we do what we do is almost impossible. Activities or tasks without a final motive are the most difficult to maintain over time. In that case, they are performed without care and interest, and performance is poor, for deep down we are not interested in it. Therefore, it would be good to have some image in our working environment. Either on our desk or on our computer, the  kind of image that reminds us of our reasons to strive for our goal.

If our work doesn’t make us happy, we need to look at this picture. This job is a job that brings bread to the table for our family. Thanks to this work, we can go on trips that we enjoy a lot. It allows us to go to concerts or go out with our loved ones. Sometimes this work and the tasks it entails are not satisfactory in themselves, but they allow us to achieve our goals. That is, it is good if we have elements that give us this motivation.
